I started writing this the other day with the intention of filling in my "points" with verse references and such that evening...well, I now think I will just post it now to try and keep things rel event and timely :)
I have been really excited to start reading the Bible this year because I knew we start with Genesis. A few years ago we studied Genesis in BSF and I fell in love! Seriously, I am pretty sure this is my favorite book of the Bible. So much beauty, destruction, human flaws and God's grace, wisdom and love all mixed up in the VERY FIRST book of the Bible!!!! So, here are a few of my thoughts from the first 5 days of reading.
- woman came from the man...I know this may sound silly, but I really do love the reminder that we are her as a helpmate to our husband.
- Noah's obedience -I am understanding that it did not rain until the flood...water came from the ground up....what faith that must have taken to obey in such a way that he could not understand at the time.
- Abraham and Lot's civil and respectful parting of ways...I love when Abraham says, if you go this way, I will go that way...it could have become a fight or a power struggle, but they knew what needed to be and they did it.
- God's promises...it is amazing that if they are delayed in our silly little human time frame it becomes so tempting and so easy to "take it into our own hands". I specifically think of Abram and Sarai and Hagar. What a mess we can make when we try to do things on our own!
So how about anyone else? Anything sticking out in your mind? Feel free to post a comment or just email me a post and i will put it up ASAP.

Teresa, I'm glad you posted your thoughts! Noah and Abraham are both men of incredible faith. And you're right, God asked them to do really hard things. We hear these stories a lot without thinking about what was really being asked of them. Wow. You've made me jealous that you read about Noah and I skipped it to get caught up. I think i'll go back and read it, I missed a lot there. Here's my thought from today.
ReplyDeleteOk, I'm only on ch. 22 so far, I know, I'm behind, I'll catch up tonight. But today I read the sacrifice of Isaac. (T-you reminded me of this with your post) I love how Abraham told his servants,"Stay here with the donkey while I and the boy go over there. We will worship and then we will come back to you." WHAT??? That is unbelievable to me. Even just re-reading it as I type makes me shake my head. The only word he'd had from God is to take Isaac and sacrifice him as a burnt offering. So his faith in God, his knowledge of who God is and His character led him to believe that he AND Isaac would return after their worship. But none-the-less, he was obediently headed to kill him. I wonder what he was thinking, or how this would all work out.
To clarify, I think that the fact that Abraham actually said what he was thinking aloud to the servants goes a step further than believing that God would somehow spare Isaac, he actually said it in a definite statement.
